Being an educational assistant in the Yukon means that you will play a key role in providing education to the territory’s nearly 6000 students across 34 schools.

Pay and benefits
Job description
  • with the guidance of the classroom teacher, learning assistance teacher and student support services specialists, you will support the teacher to implement the student’s learning plan throughout the day; and 
  • support students with various academic, cognitive and physical needs. This may include aiding in the preparation of classroom materials, supporting children on the playground, working one on one or with a group of students, supporting children with challenging behaviours, teaching life skills and assisting with medical needs. 
  • The salaries for educational assistant positions vary from $44,413 to $66,197 depending on the level of education and years of teaching experience.
Training
  • The Department of Education is in the process of developing a comprehensive Yukon-specific training program for educational assistants.
  • Funding is also available for educational assistants to receive training in subject areas specific to the children that they support.
Recruiting process
  1. Resume submission – submit your resume to the job you wish to apply for clearly demonstrating how you meet the required qualifications and experience.
  2. Resume screening – all resumes are reviewed and screened by human resources and the school administrator. Candidates are notified of their status in approximately one week after a job posting is closed.
  3. Interviews – candidates who are screened in will be contacted for interviews.
  4. Offer of employment – the successful candidate(s) will be contacted and issued a verbal offer of employment followed by a written offer. 
  5. Submission of credentials – once an offer of employment is accepted we will ask for the documentation and credentials required to determine salary and ensure conditions of employment are met.
Job requirements
  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent;
  • experience working with youth;
  • experience with trauma informed educational practices would be an asset;
  • experience with restorative justice in a classroom setting would be an asset; and
  • post-secondary training in exceptionalities worker program, special education, teacher education, early  childhood education, social services or medical services would be an asset.
Yukon Education

Educational assistants work in a variety of different areas within the Department of Education. Most work in classrooms with children who need support, but educational assistants also work on buses, for the student support services branch in specialized areas such as occupational therapy, speech, language and social skills, deaf and hard of hearing and visually impaired supports and in other locations such as the Teen Parent Centre or the Individual Learning Centre.
